How to Read a Layer Page
Every layer in the catalog has its own page. Here is what each section contains and where the information comes from.
Category and short description
Each page opens with the layer's title, its category badge, and — where available — a short introductory description pulled from the dataset's GeoNetwork abstract.
Data Visualisation
An interactive map preview is embedded from Graph Lite, shown at the layer's native geographic extent using the same styling as in the platform. It is generated automatically from the GeoServer WMS endpoint. For recently published layers, there may be a short delay before the preview becomes available while access and publication settings are configured.
Technical information
The metadata table is pulled automatically from GeoNetwork and GeoServer. It includes:
- Coverage — the geographic extent (e.g. Belgium, Europe, Global)
- Data format — the file or service format (e.g. Raster GeoTIFF, Vector)
- Projection — the coordinate reference system the layer is served in
- Resolution — the spatial detail of the data (e.g. ~100 m, ~1 km)
- Update frequency — how often the dataset is refreshed
- Source — the originating organisation or data provider
- License — the terms under which the data can be used
- Last updated — when the dataset content last changed, verified against actual data changes
- Data provider — a link to the provider's own site or terms & conditions, where available
Where Source or License is shown as "Pending," that information hasn't yet been captured for this layer — not that no restrictions apply. Other fields are simply omitted from the table until the data is available.
Description
Below the technical information, the longer description is split into named sections where the source abstract provides them:
- Interpreting the data — how to read the map visually: what the colour scale represents, what value ranges are meaningful, and what spatial patterns are worth attention
- Resolution and update frequency — the dataset's spatial resolution and refresh cycle, where distinct from the technical information above
- Source — a link to the original source, dataset documentation, or publishing organisation, where confirmed
Not every layer's abstract is structured this way — where it isn't, the full description is shown as a single passage instead.
Use cases
Where a layer is referenced by a published industry use case (see the Insurance and Logistics pages), it's listed here with a link back to that workflow. Layers not yet assigned to a use case simply omit this section.
Related layers
Layers sharing the same category and at least one country are shown here automatically as cards — no manual curation required. This is a first pass at surfacing relationships between datasets and will improve as the underlying data model does.
