Submarine cables
The Submarine Cables dataset is a global vector line layer mapping the routes of
undersea fibre-optic telecommunications cables connecting continents, countries, and
islands. Sourced from TeleGeography's Submarine Cable Map — the authoritative global
registry of submarine cable systems — the dataset covers active and planned cable
systems with associated metadata. This layer is valuable for maritime infrastructure
risk assessment, business continuity planning, telecommunications exposure modelling,
and understanding the physical backbone of global internet connectivity.

Interpreting the data
Each line represents the route of a single submarine cable
system. Cable routes are approximate — the exact seafloor path may deviate from the
displayed centreline. Cables are critical infrastructure; damage from anchors, fishing,
seismic events, or sabotage can disrupt internet connectivity for entire regions.
Resolution and update frequency
Vector lines; global coverage. Dataset version: 26 March 2026.
Updated periodically as new cable systems are announced and commissioned.
