Global Extreme Heat Hazard - RP 5

Natural Hazardsinsurance

The Global Extreme Heat Hazard (Return Period 5 years) is a raster dataset representing
the level of heat stress expected to be exceeded on average once every 5 years
(20% annual probability of exceedance) across the globe. Pixel values express a
temperature-based heat stress metric in degrees Celsius, derived from historical
climate observations and probabilistic modelling. This layer is valuable for assessing
chronic and acute heat risk to human health, outdoor workers, agricultural systems,
and infrastructure in climate risk and underwriting contexts.

Interpreting the data

the colour scale ranges from light yellow (≤ 25°C, low heat
stress conditions) through orange (28–32°C, moderate to high) to deep red (> 32°C,
extreme heat stress). Higher values indicate areas where intense heat events recur
more frequently. A 5-year return period represents relatively common heat extremes —
areas already showing extreme values at RP5 are at very high baseline risk.
